Spa Director and Nurse Injector at Renew You Medi Spa

In working with dermatologists, plastic surgeons, medi and luxury spas, we at MEG 21 with Supplamine® have learned a great deal over the past 10+ years from our partners.  Here are the insights of one of our partners, an experienced professional with over 10 years of hands-on experience improving the skin health and beauty of hundreds of her clients.

What are your best tips for protecting skin health and beauty during this time of year?

Burr…Cold weather and low humidity leave your skin screaming for help!  To add insult to injury, the harsher the winter the worse your skin is going to look and feel.  Choose healthy and hydrating skincare products for your face and body.  Look for products that have hyaluronic acid, Supplamine®, Vitamin C, antioxidants, growth factors, and other important nutrients which are found in top-line professional skin care products, like MEG 21, PCA, and our Renew You private label products for your face.  I would also recommend our natural skin care line, Farm House Fresh, for the entire body, since it’s not just our face that suffers from the harsh effects of the weather.

What do you look for when assessing a client’s skin type and determining some of the underlying causes of existing skin conditions?

I ask a lot of questions to get detailed information on their lifestyle and habits.  How often do you shower or wash your face?  What products do you use for cleansing?  What is your normal diet? Do you drink plenty of water? Do you eat a well-balanced diet that consists of fruits and veggies?  Are you getting enough sleep at night?

What about genetic and other factors?

Genetics are important, which is why I routinely ask:  How old was your mother when she started to develop signs of aging? Did she have skin problems?  I probe tobacco use and, of course, sun exposure: Do you wear an SPF daily, even when you are not planning outdoor activities?  Do you limit your exposure during 10 am and 2 pm?

Once I have a good understanding of all of these areas, we begin to discuss areas of concern and establish a plan of action.

As you think about your clients’ skin condition, do you see a diet/skin aging and skin health connection?

Diet is crucial in maintaining healthy skin.  Red wine, in moderation, actually has a positive effect.  It is good for your heart and for your skin.  It contains powerful antioxidants with health-boosting benefits to fight free radicals, which improve heart health and skin.  Chocolate has its benefits and detriments.  The relationship between chocolate and breakouts has been debunked.  Cocoa and more pure chocolates, particularly dark chocolate, are rich in antioxidants, which protect our skin from free radicals.  Highly processed chocolates with artificial ingredients and lots of sugar are not as beneficial.

And what about the sugar/skin connection?

If you want to have gorgeous skin, cut out, or at least minimize, your intake of foods high in sugar content. Glycation occurs when we consume too much sugar.  This can cause skin conditions like acne, eczema, and rosacea to worsen, and impair your skin’s ability to heal itself, not to mention causing those dreaded wrinkles and sagging skin!  That’s why I recommend MEG 21 with Supplamine products.  They contain Supplamine and are formulated to counter the effects of these toxic sugars in skin. I cannot keep my MEG on the shelf!

What are the most important things we should consider when choosing from shelf-upon-shelf of skin care products?

Results–Will the product deliver on its promises? Quality products are scientifically formulated to penetrate the skin, treat and correct.  Look for products with clinically proven results.

Cost Effective–Spending is about setting the right priorities, given budget constraints. Remember, your skin will be around a lot longer than that expensive handbag.  You’ll wear it forever!  Invest in yourself—and in products proven to work.

Ingredients–Are they high quality? Over-the-counter skin care products might have good ingredients, but do they deliver results you want? Look for professional products that have scientific validity and are clinically proven.  You want higher quality ingredients that provide continuous skin improvement and ongoing results.

How did you select the products for Renew You Medi Spa?

I handpick every product we sell.  When testing a new product, I apply one product to half my face and then apply another product to the other half.  I do this for 30 days. If I did not see results by then, I move to the next product.  The professional skincare products we sell are also applied to our clients during their anti-aging treatment regimens. We not only offer anti-aging facials, but we also offer Botox, Dermal Filler injections, Aesthetic and Medical laser treatments.  What’s your secret for keeping your complexion, at 54 years of age, so wrinkle-free and youthful?

Living right, eating dark chocolate, drinking red wine and lying about my age. (I’m 39!)  Just joking….  I lead a busy life so I don’t have time for long skincare routines or crazy expensive products.  I wash my face twice daily with a glycolic-based cleanser and apply moisturizers, one specific for my eye and one for my face, neck and décolleté.  After cleansing each evening, I mix together a small amount of two MEG 21 with Supplamine products– Advanced Formula and Toner+– and then apply the mixture to my face, neck, décolleté, and tops of my hands. I also use my 10% glycolic acid cream at night 3 to 4 times per week. The glycolic acid boosts cell turnover and increases collagen production and my MEG keeps my skin smooth, wrinkle free, and very well hydrated.  It’s the perfect post-shower beauty treatment!  The Advanced Formula and Toner+ combination acts synergistically to deliver maximum potency, which is what every woman 50+ requires.

What else do you do?

Exfoliate!  I try to maintain proper internal hydration, and eat foods high in antioxidants.  I do NOT use tobacco products.  I only use professional grade quality skin care products. I love being outdoors on the lake or golf course, but being in the sun is a no-no for my skin.  I was diagnosed with squamous cell skin cancer a few years back.  I use a broad spectrum (UVA and UVB sunscreen) on both my face and body.  I love my tinted sunscreen for my face.  I’m protected and look fabulous with the sheer coverage.   I use it every day for make up!  Treating myself to medical spa anti-aging facials, microderms, glycolic peels, and yes, I love Botox!

What’s the biggest ah ha! you gained from years of practice at a high-end medi spa?

Take care of your skin and you take care of yourself– you feel better; you are more confident; and you have a smile on your face and the world smiles back!
