What is licorice root extract?
Licorice root extract comes from the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra, a plant in the pea family that has been used in traditional botanical care for centuries. Its most studied compounds for skin are glabridin and liquiritin, along with other flavonoids.
What it does for skin
Licorice root extract helps brighten the look of dull or uneven skin, helps soften the look of dark areas, and helps skin look calmer and less red. It also brings antioxidant support.
How it works
Glabridin is known to help moderate tyrosinase, the enzyme involved in making pigment, which is how licorice helps skin tone look more even over time. Liquiritin is associated with helping disperse existing pigment. Licorice’s flavonoids are also known for their soothing, antioxidant properties.
Because it works on several fronts at once, brightening, calming and antioxidant, licorice root is a good partner for other brightening ingredients. Results build gradually, and daily sun protection helps keep tone looking even.
Why MEG 21 uses it
In Bright & Firm Eye Treatment, licorice root extract is part of a brightening trio with niacinamide and a vitamin C derivative, helping the under-eye area look brighter. Caffeine helps it look refreshed, peptides and bakuchiol help smooth, and Supplamine® adds anti-glycation support for the thin skin around the eyes.
How to use it in your routine
Tap a small amount of Bright & Firm Eye Treatment around the eye area after cleansing and serum. Brightening ingredients show best with consistent use and daily sun protection, so finish your morning with Daily Mineral Shield SPF 30.
Who is it for?
Licorice root extract suits people with dark-looking circles, dullness or uneven-looking tone, including those with sensitive skin who want a gentle botanical option.
